Hangcha CBD20 Pallet Truck: Replacing the 48V Lift Battery
A warehouse operator running Hangcha CBD20 electric pallet trucks needed replacement lift batteries. The trucks use a compact 48V lithium pack supplied with the machine, and the customer wanted a like-for-like replacement rather than a modified or upgraded pack.
This is a short account of what "like-for-like" actually has to mean for this battery, and why one specification that looks identical on paper can stop a pack from working in the truck. The customer has asked not to be identified, so no operational details are included.
The machine and the battery it takes
The Hangcha CBD20 is a semi-electric pallet truck. Travel is manual — the operator pushes the truck — and the battery powers the hydraulic lift only. That is why the pack is small: it does no traction work.

The pack is a sealed black case with a carry handle on top and two terminals under protective covers. It lifts straight out of a recess in the truck's control housing, which means replacement is a hand operation — no tools, no lifting equipment, no rewiring.
The specification that decides whether a pack is a drop-in
Most of the nameplate is easy to match. Voltage, capacity and physical size are all straightforward. The line that matters most is the one that looks like noise:
Battery designation: IMpP8/131/162 (13S1P) M / -10+70/90
13S1P means thirteen cells in series, one parallel string. Thirteen cells reaching 48V nominal means roughly 3.7V per cell — which identifies the chemistry as lithium-ion (NMC or similar), not LiFePO4.
This matters because a LiFePO4 pack sold as "48V" is built differently. LiFePO4 cells sit at about 3.2V nominal, so a 48V LiFePO4 pack uses fifteen cells in series, not thirteen. The two packs share a nominal voltage label and almost share a full-charge voltage:

Nominal and full-charge voltages are close enough to look interchangeable. The discharge behaviour is not. A LiFePO4 pack holds voltage nearly flat for most of its capacity and then drops sharply, while a 13S lithium-ion pack declines steadily. If the truck's controller uses pack voltage to estimate remaining charge or to trigger low-voltage cut-out — and on machines in this class it usually does — swapping chemistry changes when the truck decides it is empty, even though the pack is electrically "48V" in both cases.
This is the most common reason a nominally correct replacement behaves oddly in service. The pack is not faulty; it is speaking a different dialect to the controller.

Because the specification is identical, there is no performance claim to make here. The pack does not run longer, charge faster or lift more — it does exactly what the original did. That is the entire requirement. A replacement lift battery that changes machine behaviour is a problem, not a feature.
Fitting is the same hand operation as removing the original: lift the old pack out by its handle, seat the new one in the recess, reconnect. No modification to the truck.
What to check before ordering any replacement pack
If you are sourcing a replacement for a machine like this, these are the checks worth doing in order:
- Photograph the nameplate. Model number, voltage, capacity in both Ah and Wh, and the battery designation string. The designation is the field most suppliers do not ask for and the one that determines chemistry.
- Count the cells in series. 13S at 48V means lithium-ion. 15S at 48V means LiFePO4. They are not interchangeable without checking the controller's voltage thresholds.
- Measure the case, not just the capacity. These packs sit in a moulded recess. A few millimetres of extra height stops the housing closing.
- Check terminal position and polarity orientation. Same connector type in a mirrored position is still a non-fit.
- Confirm the charger. A charger profiled for one chemistry will not correctly terminate the other, even where full-charge voltages look similar.
- Ask what happens at low state of charge. How the BMS behaves at cut-off determines whether the truck warns the operator or simply stops.
Frequently asked questions
Can I fit a LiFePO4 pack to a machine that came with a 13S lithium-ion battery?
Sometimes, but it is not a drop-in decision. Check the truck's low-voltage cut-out and any state-of-charge display against the LiFePO4 discharge curve first, and confirm the charger is profiled for LiFePO4. Matching the nominal voltage on its own is not sufficient.
Why is the battery only 480Wh? That seems small for a pallet truck.
Because on a semi-electric truck the battery only powers the hydraulic lift. Travel is manual. A fully electric pallet truck of the same load rating carries a traction battery an order of magnitude larger.
Does using a non-OEM battery affect the truck warranty?
That depends entirely on the manufacturer's terms and your region — check with your dealer before ordering. What a correctly specified replacement should not do is change how the machine behaves.
How long should a lift battery like this last?
Cycle life depends far more on charging habits and ambient temperature than on the badge. Packs left flat for long periods, or repeatedly charged in cold conditions, age fastest regardless of who made them.
