Pallet Jack Battery Voltages: 24V, 12V and Multi-Battery Setups

Almost every walkie and rider pallet jack in North American service runs on 24V. Where the confusion starts is that a 24V pack is not always one battery — and searches for "6 volt" or "12 volt" pallet jack batteries usually mean someone is looking at the blocks inside their 24V pack rather than a different system voltage.

Two practical consequences. First, if your truck runs multiple blocks in series, replace them as a matched set — mixing an old block with new ones drags the whole string down to the weakest unit. Second, a semi-electric truck with a small 48V lift-only pack is a different animal entirely: it powers the hydraulics, not the wheels, so capacity is measured in hundreds of watt-hours rather than kilowatt-hours.

How to Replace a Pallet Jack Battery

Most replacement problems are specification problems, not supply problems. Work through these in order and a drop-in fit is straightforward.

  1. Photograph the nameplate. You need voltage, capacity in both Ah and Wh, and — on lithium packs — the cell configuration string (for example 13S1P or 8S2P). That last field determines chemistry, and it is the one most suppliers never ask for.
  2. Measure the tray, not the battery. Length, width and height of the compartment. A pack that is 10 mm too tall will not let the cover close.
  3. Identify the connector and its position. Anderson SB50, SB175, Euro DIN and REMA are not interchangeable, and the same connector mounted on the opposite side is still a non-fit.
  4. Check cable length and exit direction. Short cables are the most common reason a correctly sized pack cannot be installed.
  5. Confirm the charger matches the chemistry. A charger profiled for flooded lead-acid will not correctly terminate a lithium pack, and vice versa.
  6. Match voltage exactly; treat capacity as a minimum. Going up in Ah within the tray envelope is usually fine. Changing system voltage is not.

"Maintenance-free" is used loosely in this market, and the differences matter to whoever actually looks after the fleet.

Lithium removes the two jobs that actually consume labour — watering and equalisation — along with the ventilated battery room they imply. It does not remove the need to check that terminals are tight and that the BMS is not logging faults. Any supplier claiming a battery needs no attention at all is overselling.

What a Pallet Jack Battery Costs

Prices move with cell markets, so a fixed figure published today would be wrong within a quarter. What does not change is what drives the number:

  • Capacity, not voltage. Within 24V, the jump from 210 Ah to 620 Ah is where most of the cost sits.
  • Chemistry. LiFePO4 typically carries two to three times the purchase price of an equivalent flooded lead-acid pack.
  • Customisation. Non-standard tray dimensions, cable lengths and connectors add tooling cost on small orders.
  • Charger. If your existing charger has no lithium profile, budget for a matched one alongside the pack.

Comparing on purchase price alone is the mistake this market makes most often. A lithium pack delivering three to four times the cycle life, no watering labour and no battery-room overhead usually wins on cost per operating hour well before it wins on sticker price. Cables, Connectors and Accessories

A pack that is electrically correct can still be unusable if the interface is wrong. The parts that decide this:

  • Connectors. Anderson SB50 (50 A) and SB175 (175 A) dominate North American pallet jacks; Euro DIN and REMA appear on European trucks. Housing colour is keyed to voltage to prevent cross-connection — it is a safety feature, not decoration.
  • Cable gauge and length. Undersized cable runs hot and costs you voltage under load. Cables that are too short are the most frequent cause of a "wrong" battery that was actually specified correctly.
  • Terminal hardware. Insulated bolts and correctly torqued connections prevent the resistance build-up that shows up later as a battery that will not hold charge.
